Trenton Awarded $250K Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize

The City of Trenton has been awarded the national Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Culture of Health Prize, a recognition celebrating the community’s collaborative efforts that have resulted in real, systemic change in health outcomes and social well-being.

Trenton is the first New Jersey community to ever win the Prize in the ten years since it launched. Despite facing challenges related to poverty, housing, education, and access to care, Trenton community organizations and leaders are working together to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the city. The RWJF Culture of Health Prize is a validation of this ongoing commitment to building a future grounded in wellness and shared opportunity.

Trenton Health Team (THT) and Capital Health, applied for the $250,000 prize on behalf of the community, in collaboration with many longstanding partners.

The prize application was further strengthened by a video, where a number of community initiatives were covered, including THT’s Maternal Health Stakeholders group, a coalition of over 20 organizations focused on improving the lives of families in Mercer County and surrounding areas.

Kimberly Mitchell, Senior Program Manager of Family Health at THT, says, “The partnerships that exist in Trenton are part of what fuels the revitalization and strength of the city. Every one of us can be part of fortifying this to be sure that all children, neighbors and people in the city are taken care of. This prize is a celebration of all the amazing work that has been done and the path being forged, but also an acknowledgement that we are not done yet.”

By working together, Trenton can continue to prove its ability to overcome challenges with community-based partnerships, data, and solutions. The applicant group is working collaboratively to determine how to utilize the $250,000 prize.
