Trenton Health Team invites mothers to learn benefits of breastfeeding and how to save an infant’s life with CPR–plus enjoy snacks and giveaways–during a free program from 10 am to Noon, Monday June 3 at the Trenton Free Public Library, 120 Academy Street. (en español)
Join the Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Family & Community Health Sciences Educator to learn why breastfeeding is recommended for babies and how to make the process easier for both mom and baby, along with nutrition information for infants up to six months old, how to recognize when your baby is hungry and safe feeding methods. Breastfeeding not only prevents childhood obesity, but it can also help breastfeeding women lose weight gained during pregnancy.
The American Heart Association will explain how to recognize when a baby requires cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to do it. Participants also will receive a free infant CPR kit to take home.
In addition, St. Francis Medical Center staff will provide free blood pressure screenings.
THT recently celebrated the opening of a Mamava lactation suite at the library. The lactation suite is a self-contained, mobile pod with comfortable benches, a fold-down table, an electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump, and a door that can be locked for privacy. The pod can accommodate one person, as well mothers with babies or other children.
Both the Mamava lactation suite and the June 3 free program to educate women about breastfeeding are supported by THT with funds provided by Trinity Health through their Transforming Communities Initiative (TCI) grant program. A multi-year initiative, TCI addresses the social determinants of health through policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change, focusing on the prevention of childhood obesity and tobacco use.
